A hardware experiment: Qwen MoE

Try a much larger mixture-of-experts model and see what your GTX 1060 and 32 GB of system RAM can handle. Treat this as an experiment, not a guaranteed fit or speed target.

What you’re learning

Qwen3-30B-A3B has around 30 billion total parameters and activates a smaller subset for each token. “3B active” does not mean only 3B of weights need to be stored: model weights still take memory, along with context and runtime overhead. Quantization reduces the file and memory footprint, usually with a quality tradeoff.

Work through it

  1. Check your exact hardware. Find whether your GTX 1060 has 3 GB or 6 GB of VRAM, and check available system memory and disk space. A 30B-class model is likely to rely heavily on system RAM and CPU with this setup; generation may be slow.
  2. Use a quantized GGUF. The Qwen publisher provides GGUF builds. Start with a smaller quantization such as Q4_K_M rather than a full-precision file. Check the current download size and model card before pulling it.
  3. Run a first test. If Ollama is installed, the publisher’s model page documents a direct run command for the Qwen3 GGUF. The first run downloads several gigabytes. Keep other apps closed, start with a short prompt, and use a modest context length.
  4. Record the outcome. Note whether it loads, approximate time to first token, tokens per second if available, memory use, and whether the answer is useful. If it fails or is too slow, try a smaller model or a smaller quantization.

Example command / prompt

ollama run hf.co/Qwen/Qwen3-30B-A3B-GGUF:Q4_K_M
Keep this in mind. The model has a large total weight set even though only a few billion parameters are active per token. Your 32 GB RAM may be enough for some quantized configurations but leaves limited room for other applications and larger contexts. GTX 1060 VRAM, driver support, runtime version, and quantization all affect the result.
Try thisCompare the same prompt with Gemma 2 2B and Qwen3 30B-A3B Q4_K_M. Which answer is better for your task, and is the quality difference worth the extra memory and wait?
